My copy is the second edition, published in 1975.  In the forward I find "I
have also omitted many obsolete, archaic and textbook terms which, if they
were ever used, have long since been abandoned or forgotten.  An occasional
curious term has been included, because I thought it might be an old
favourite with some readers, but such words have been stigmatized by an
asterisk."
