ANSTHRLD - Newbie question - "An Heraldic Alphabet"

Greetings, all! I picked up a copy of "An Heraldic
Alphabet" at Half-Price Books over the weekend, and
have been thumbing through it and trying not to drool
too much. And I noticed something that I can't find
an answer to in the book.

A relatively large number of entries in the book (I
got the 1996 paperback edition) are marked with an
asterisk , but I can't for the life of me find noted
anywhere what the asterisk is for. I've tried to
figure it out, but there seems to be no apparent
pattern. Every type of term (partitions, charges,
etc) have marked terms. I thought that it might be
terms of French derivation, but not every one of them
is marked. Does ANYBODY have an answer for me. Merci
beaucoup - Andre de Chartres, Bryn Gwlad
