That would be the "backstaff" or the "cross-staff". HE Lyelf the Lame has
done research in the field of such instruments, and made a related
presentation to the Collegium Gradium in Steppes.  HL Lodovico (nee'
Leonitas)
also has significant research completed into the form and usage of the
quadrant, astrolabe, and assorted other navigational tools (lessee, did the
astrolabe go to Gulf Wars A&S _this_ year -- I did not, myself, attend --
or is it just that I saw said implement under construction and then also in
assorted displays, alongside the quadrant he made first...
