A couple of questions about banners, pennons, etc. These arose during a
discussion of enhancing heraldic display during Elfsea's investiture of our
new Baron and Baroness.

Boutell states in the chapter titles 'flags' that period banners were
sometimes 'ensigned with coronets'. Does this mean that Elfsea could create
a Baronial banner with a baronial coronet on it? Would the coronet be added
in chief?, at fess point? would the flag have a narrow strip above the coat
of arms proper that would have a crown on it? Does anyone know what Boutell
is referring to?

If we do a period pennon we would be using the kingdom badge (sable
mullet on gold) next to the staff and a long fly (in Elfsea livery colors)
carrying badges and the motto. Obviously we would use the badges of the
orders, the question is whether we can improvise badges of some sort for
the cantons and college, (burning hill for Dragonsfire Tor, etc.). Are
there Ansteorran precedents for how to arrange a pennon?

Researching this it suddenly occurred to me that as a personal banner for
the Baron/Baroness you can make a compelling period case for marshaling the
arms of the all the local groups (in order of precedence). So that the
Baron of Elfsea would enter court behind a banner quartering Elfsea,
Dragonsfire Tor, Loch Ruadh, and Three Bridges. That is if anyone can be
found crazy enough to sew such a banner.

The first two questions are somewhat urgent since we would like to start on
some heraldic display now so it will be ready for Springfaire. The third is
simply musings.
