The crampon is indeed a period charge and was relatively common in period
German heraldry (where it was called a double-hook).
German armory most often uses one, two, or three charges on a plain field.
If there are no conflicts, one of the following devices would be very good
style for German armory.
Azure, a crampon Or (palewise)
Azure, two crampons addorsed Or (palewise back-to-back)
Azure, three crampons fesswise in pale Or
Gwenllian
