I need to hit a few more sources (charters, letters, etc.,) but the
overwhelming usage in the ASC is the "-ing" element. Yes there are examples
of "Eadwardes sunu" or "Æþelredes dohtor", but these are merely designators
when used in context. Essentially the genatives in this case can be
replaced by the genative pronoun "his" (i.e.: "his sunu ond dohtor", both
which occur often). In a true patromyn, you can do this. Rædwald His sunu
does not make any sense in this context. When you see the previous
construction it is usually in this pattern: "Ælfric 7 Rædwald his
sunu"--"Aelfric and his son Raedwald".
The only time in the ASC I saw The split patronym being used as such was
applied to two people Anlaf and Rægnald. In these instances it appears the
attempt at the patronym is strictly a literally transliteration of the
Scandinavian patronym (neither of which I have handy right now). But I
believe the ASC year cited is in the 800's and Anlaf and Rægenald are really
Ófalfr and Regnaldr (possibly not the exact Norse construction).
Despite these all the English geneologies still retain the "-ing"
element.
Therefore my hypothesis would be the "sunu" and "dohtor" elements really
could be only applied to someone living in England sometime during or
immediately after the Danelaw and the sucession of the various Scandinavian
kings. Anyone cultural and tribal English would use "-ing" until such time
(which I have yet to even guess at) as the influence of such Nordic
patronyms became the norm in the culture.
Still working on what is appropriate for an English woman of the age.

Any of this make an sense from which to build? As I said I think the
usage prior to Scandinavian influence has to do with the context of the
source from which we derive the patronym.

Godspeed,
Cyniric
