I agree entirely.  I have seen no evidence of this whatsoever.

Tell me about it; however, I recommend the following book that I obtained
(thank you, Emma!) since then for good hard research (though still a little
lacking sometimes in distinction between historical and modern data):

_The Book of Indian Names_, Raha Ram Mehrotra (editor), 1994,
  Rupa & Co., ISBN 81-7167-149-7

Basically it's a collection of papers on naming practices in various
India subcultures.  Pretty slick.
