The mamluks, I think, were an Arabic or Bedoin ethinc
group, very highly educated (unlike some illiterate
Welchmen) who held scribes in very high esteem.  To
have a pen or pencil box on you "device" was
concidered a high honor.  I'll have to check my
Sarecen Heraldry book to be sure, and I can't find it
right now.
