Here is a quote from an Osprey Book I have entitled "The Mamluks, 1250-1517"
"The Arabic word mamluk meant a soldier recruited as a young slave, then
trained, educated and released as a full-time professional."
They formed the main body of many Muslim armies, and eventually became civil
leaders of many areas, especially Egypt.
