I presume that's true: you thought that a canton was illegal.

However, cantons are perfectly legal on their own.  By Table 1 in the
COA Glossary of Terms, a *charged* canton is *reserved* for people who
have received an augmentation of arms.

In period terms, I think that that's bogus -- at least a canton
charged with one widget is not uncommon from the earliest times.
Nevertheless, that's the current ruling.
