[ANSTHRLD] Identification of Complex Lines of Division

I'm curious about how identification of a complex line is determined. _Per
bend sinister wavy, sable and purpure, a bordure embattled argent_ was
returned for "unidentifiability of the line of division" per the decision in
the August 1992 LoAR on Landric Dægmær's device (see quote from LoAR below).

How does one know if a field divided between two tinctures is sufficiently
distinguishable? What kind of division lines are clear enough to identify?
Per pale, per fess, and per bend seem to be acceptable--half the field is
one tincture, the other half another, in one clean line. Quarterly and per
saltire also seem to be acceptable--alternating quarters of the field, by
means of two clean lines.

What about a chevron makes complex lines of division more clear?
