It's not ambiguous (in the Greek, at least) -- it's poetic.  "anatole" is
derived from the verb "anatello", which means "to rise up" -- used of rivers,
celestial bodies, fire, and the like.  So the noun "anatole" is that place
over there where things rise up, which happens to be the east.

Still doesn't really help us with the name of a specific object, alas. :)
