gives Richard Cole 1148.
You can mix English and German documented forms.

It should be usable.
Kol/Kohl can mean cabbage or coal in Middle High German.
I see both spellings but Kol is the most common
especially in pre-1400 examples.

The h seems to be in the more modern spellings but
left out from the 1200s era.  I don't have any examples
from the 1500s that would show a trend.
