According to "The List of Alternate Titles" as 
approved by the College of Arms, found at: 
http://www.sca.org/heraldry/titles.html

Thegn is the "Scots Gaelic" and "Old English" alternate
for Baron.  So, any Baron may use Thegn instead of
Baron.  (allowing for custom and tradition of course)
