[ANSTHRLD] heraldic tabard

I'm in the process of making a heraldic tabard for my personal use.[1]
Y'all will be happy to know that I've bagged the green with gold trumpets
completely, and instead am using my arms on the front/back/sleeves.  The
question I've run into though is whether or not to sew the sleeves, or tie
the sleeves, to the body.  Is there any period preference in this, or is it
just an asthetic preference?

[1] my personal use being when I need a herald to wear my arms, not for me
to wear my own arms (that would be a bit reduntant)
