OK -- here's the same process repeated in reverse for the return trip:
Imagine the fighter walking over to the heralds' consultation table and
yelling "Anybody who wants to be a herald in this kingdom ought to be
service-oriented enough to come over and herald the fighters onto the
field," then picking a likely-looking herald nearby, kicking him in the
butt, dragging him by the crossed trumpets over to the field and standing by
expectantly while instructing the herald on his titles and name
pronunciation.

Somebody offering to carry a heavy load is chivalrous; asking for help is a
reasonable action.  Demanding that it be done is not.

It's the difference between asking someone for a date and kicking him in the
butt for not dating you.
