Regarding Daniel's comment below, I'm posting the suggestions I made to Star here on the list. I had a similar thought as Daniel, to keep the award marshallate-neutral.

I also took into consideration something Master Francois mentioned. He noted that we have the Sable Crane (animal) and Sable Thistle (plant), so the Sable <Whatever> should be a mineral (or man-made). I admit, I haven't done any kind of conflict checking.

Award of the Sable Cross
Award of the Sable Crescent
Award of the Sable Horn
Award of the Sable Ring (annulet or torc)

The insignia I've designed is the same for all of them, just replace the charge as appropriate:
Or, a <charge> sable and issuant from base a demi-sun gules. It's simple, clean, distinguishable, and Ansteorran. Although, it is a bit similar to a Rising Star.

While the name "Sable Ring" doesn't thrill me, I do like the connection of it to Ulsted. Ulsted's persona is Saxon, and the Anglo-Saxon kings were also called "ring-givers".

The Sable Cross could be interesting too, since you could use a different style of cross to represent the different marshallate sport. Since a cross is a cross, they'd only conflict with eachother.

In service,
Alden Drake

I think that a name that does not jar with any martial
activities, if a good one can be devised, is better than a name that
has associations with just one or two.
