Neanderthal = modern for Neander Valley

Was this valley known by that name in period?

I just realized that I have a wonderfully accessable German name
source on the bookcase behind me: the translated Bahlow. That's what
I get for replying to e-mail after 2 in the morning. With
abbrev. expanded:

Dahl(mann): Low German, living in the valley. Compare also place
name Dahl, Dahle, frequent in Westphalia.

Thaler (Dahler), Upper German: from the dwelling in a valley,
similarly: Berger: auf dem Berge (on the mountain); Lutz uß dem
Tal, Füssen 1370. Compare with Matchthaler, Lechthaler, et
cetera: from place names ending in -thal. Also Thaller of the
    same meaning.

In other words, Dahl can be

- the name of a specific place. Find one Dahl as a specific place in
period and I'm 99% sure that "von Dahl" is a fine. Append
      -roald
to your Google search to exclude a famous author, and also perhaps
you need to append other inclusion or exclusion terms.
- a variant of Thal, "valley". I'm not sure from the above whether
  you'd need a "von" variant (von + der/die/das/den/dem/des/whatever)
or whether it could be unmarked.
