  By placing the keys fesswise (wards facing base), both the ward and the ring sides of the keys are in a high contast portion of the field when taken as a charge group.  
   
  Although each individual key has a possible contrast problem, the mind sees the group and assumes all three charges are emblazoned the same way -- it takes the ward side from the keys in canton and in base, and merges them with the ring side from the key in cantel.  That's the benefit of simple heraldry.

Nope. They're a good size for secondaries. Yeah, maybe the wolf
could be a tad taller but it's no big deal, really. There's good size
differences between the charge groups.
