One of the joys of a large library is the use of obscure (and irrelevant) 
reference books.  The Devil's Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce, gives:

belladonna, n.: "In Italian, a beautiful lady; in English, a deadly poison. 
A striking example of the essential identity of the two tongues."
