[ANSTHRLD] Mottos etc.

I want to drop back into this thread about mottos, supporters, etc. long
enough to make a point about something that I feel is vastly under
utilized in our kingdom.

As a comparison, consider the registration of a device or arms. If you
choose to register a device, what do you get? Effectively you get a
trademark registration on a symbol that represents you in the SCA. Once
registered, it is yours and it cannot be registered to anyone else. You
get "ownership" of the emblazon. It costs money; you pay a fee for
registration processing but you get something at the end.

So... What do you get if you register your "achievements" in this
kingdom? It has no fee but (as previously noted) some things are not
unique and multiple people could have the same "thing". So what benefit
is there to registering achievement items and submitting yourself to the
rules imposed by the kingdom College of Heralds on what they allow or
don't allow?

Because, if your name, arms, and achievements are registered with the
appropriate authorities, then you have the right to commission a text of
your achievement. This is a more formal document than the charters
received in court with awards or orders. The text of the document
actually includes the blazon of your arms with all achievements and is
signed and sealed by the Principal Herald. The language in the text is
more period in style in many cases than the charter texts. Now, if you
want it as a period styled legal document with a cleanly drawn hand and
little to no illumination; you just have to work that out with the
artist from whom you commission the work. If you want a massively
illuminated page that present the whole text like a book of hours, you
negotiate that. But... The text is set and can only be modified by
petitioning the principal herald and you cannot claim anything on it you
have not registered because the Principal Herald will not sign and seal
it if it violates the rules established.

Will it be free? The request for one and approval or signing are free.
The actual cost for the work of art is whatever you negotiate with the
artist you commission the work from. It is a period style practice to
commission such works and the form of the text is also styled after
period legal documents. And it is a far under utilized right in our
kingdom.
