Bahlow, Hans. Deutsches Nameslexikon. Edda Gentry translation.
Friends of the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies,
Inc.,1993, ISBN 0924119357. S.n. Otte, Upper German. Ott,
Ottel,[etc.], are popular forms of the Old German emperor name
Otto (Low German Odo, Ode) made famous by Otto the Great (10th
century); made popular in the eastern part of Germany by the
Apostle of Pomerania, Bishop Otto of Bamberg. Cf. also Otto of
Wittelsbach in Bavaria. First regained currency as a f.n.
through the romantic movement (like Hugo, Kuno, etc.), then also
through Bismark. Further details in Bahlow VN (1965), Also
Brechenmacher, Der Familienname Otto:Ott (Stuttgart 1940).
Ottler is an UGer. patr. from Ottl (Jekl Otler, Iglau 1367).
LGer. patrs. are Oden(s), Otten(s), Ottsen, Otzen.

This source needs no photocopies.

If you want the info from Brechenmacher let me know.
