In lieu of quotes, a summary:  Garreth's rendering of the kingdom arms, 
at <http://herald.ansteorra.org/new/arms.jpg>, has a black crane 
against black mantling.  He's looking for appropriate ways to make the 
crane stand out more clearly.

There's nothing that says you have to use so much mantling.  Many 
period emblazons have more modest amounts.  Look at the 16th-century 
English examples at 
<http://mdz10.bib-bvb.de/~db/bsb00001647/images/index.html?seite=9>, 
for example.  The supporters there are on a plain parchment background, 
and the mantling is neatly arranged on top of the shield only.
