Greetings all,
This is a friendly reminder that Quarterly Reports are due to me no later
than April 1. No this is not an April Fool's joke. My report is due to the
Crown at Crown Tourney, which is April 5, so time is a factor. Thank you
all in advance - especially to those few who have already sent in reports!
You rock!

In service,
Alden, Star

Greetings heralds,
I spoke with HL Estrill, Acting Asterisk, about the state of the office, and
I wanted to inform everyone that based on the current progress being made,
we agreed to extend her service as Acting Asterisk for another month. This
is to allow her time to follow up on some actions she has in progress which
should allow for a smoother transition to the next Asterisk Herald. As a
result, the deadline for applications will likewise be extended until May
1. I would like to thank those individuals who have already sent in their
applications, and inform them that their applications are still being
considered for this office.

In service,
Alden, Star

Does that apply to me or do I wait until it is officially signed?

You can skip this quarterly. I would like an update from you for the next
quarterly report though (which should be due around Round Table).

Thanks,
Alden

Consider the following from a submitter:

Per bend sinister vert and sable, a wolf salient within a
bourdureembattled argent.

*versus:*

William Hethefelde

- The following device associated with this name was registered in
April of 2004 (via
Caid)
:
*Per pale
sableand
vert , an armored wolf
statant contourny
ululant within a bordure
embattled
argent
.*

This was the only possible conflict I found. Or, is there a CD for
statantand salient? The
bordure is being added to attempt and clear these conflicts:

Johnathan Crusadene Whitewolf registered June 1972:

"Gules, ermined argent, a wolf rampant argent"

Robert Strongbow registered June 1973:

"Vert, a wolf rampant argent, grasping in its erect sinister forepaw a bow
gules, held fesswise, and in its dexter forepaw a sheaf of three clothyard
shafts Or, armed and flighted argent"

Judith Jehana di Ettore, reg. 6/90 via the West,

"Per bend sinister gules and sable, a fox rampant to sinister argent"

Thank you,

Hedwig

(There's a way to get the glossary URLs to not show up in the OandA, but I
forget offhand what it is.)

There is indeed a CD between salient/rampant and statant/passant. There's
another CD, as it happens, for reversing the direction of the wolf.

There's one CD for the field, and another CD for the ermine spots, I
believe, so you probably don't need to add the bordure to clear this one.

Only one CD for the field, and there's nothing else, so yes you need the
bordure here.

One CD for the field, and another CD for the swap between the wolf facing
dexter (default) and sinister, so this one is also clear without adding the
bordure.

However, also note:

Caid, Kingdom of, registered July 2007:
Azure, a greyhound rampant regardant collared within a bordure embattled
argent.

One CD for the field, possibly one for the difference between a greyhound
and a wolf, but also possibly not (I'm not remembering my precedences very
well at the moment - as of at least the 6/2001 cover letter, they are a
conflict). No other differences, so a possible conflict.

Alistrina de Mann, registered February 1996:
Pean, a wolf sejant erect guardant within a bordure engrailed argent.

One CD for the field, and one CD for changing the complex line of the
bordure between engrailed and embattled. Clear.

Ulf de Fribois, registered October 2002:
Per bend azure and vert, a wolf rampant reguardant and a bordure indented
argent.

One CD for the field, and one CD for changing the complex line of the
bordure between indented and embattled. Clear.

It's cunningly hidden under "Display Options:" on each armory query,
under the cryptic label

Glossary links [ enabled ]
[ disabled ]

The default should be "disabled", I opine: most users know the
meanings of most of the words. Certainly people copying-and-pasting
should turn them off if they get translated into text, as on the
original note.

RfS X.4.a.ii.c has the general principle (see the Glossary of Terms
for the general statement):

The ermine furs and their variants are considered to be different
tinctures, so Per bend ermine and azure is completely different
from Per bend erminois and gules and from Per bend argent ermined
gules and sable. The addition of a field treatment is also a
change of tincture, so Per fess argent and gules is completely
different from Per fess argent masoned gules and sable.

Tincture.
One of the seven standard hues used in Society armory, or a
fur. The tinctures are the colors azure, gules, purpure, sable,
and vert and the metals argent and Or. Furs include the ermined
furs and vair, potent, scaly, papelonny, and their variations. See
also Color, Ermined Tinctures, Fur, Metal.

So one CD for tincture change of "gules ermined argent" to "per bend
whatever" -- RfS X.4.a says that all the changes to the field get only
one CD at most if there's a primary charge. A second CD is indeed
needed to clear conflict.

"Canines is canines (and a fox is deemed a canine, taxonomy be
damned)" is as long-standing a principle as "felines is felines" and
"architecture is architectures" and "stabby blades is stabby blades".
