Yanno, it's only 13 hours and 33 minutes by car (thanks to Mapquest).  All I'd have to do is take a day off from work to make the trip (sounds a lot like Gulf Wars)....
 
....not that I can afford it, mind you.

To add to my previous message: Texas to Omaha, the Texas Eagle is
scheduled to get into Union Station 14 minutes after the California
Zephyr is scheduled to leave (2:14 PM versus 2:00 PM).  Omaha to
Texas, the California Zephyr arrives at 3:40 PM; the Texas Eagle
leaves at 1:45 PM.  Given that multi-hour delays are not uncommon
(I was told that the two-hour lateness at Austin wasn't bad for the
summer), it might be worse.

Probably why the automatic trip finder has the bus transfers.
