As Mistress Serena pointed towards Stephen Friar's _A Dictionary of Heraldry_, I will liek to provide this link. While it is not the book cited, you are able to get a limited preview on Google Books of _Basic Heraldry_ by Friar and Ferguson. If you do a search on "Helm" and look at the second result (page 155) you will find couple nice profile drawings of barrel helms from the 14th C.

i suspect these may be similar to what Serena was talking about. I will also liek to apologize as it seems i misspoke earlier. The book I have access to entitled _The Dictionary of Heraldry_ is by Foster and not Friar. The Friar book I own is the same one the above Google Books link is pointing to. Though I do believe I may rectify the omission of the Friar book from my library when I get the chance. ;-D
Cheers,
Alasdair
