I don't know how you guys do this lol but here we go...

I've been doing some thinking and looking and had a thought but again couldn't 
really find anything that said if it can be done...

Sable, per bend voided engrailed argent a Phoenix rising from flame proper
1. Can you void a per bend engrailed

(Which I would assume would be a black shield with a jagged white/silver line 
from top left to bottom right.)

2. When you say proper this means the natural colors the charge would have, so 
if I say a phoenix proper would that allow me to place it centered over top of 
the per bend, even though there will be yellow and red in the phoenix's natural 
coloring?

I'll take that bet.  A Name Pattern Search at
http://oanda.sca.org/oanda_np.cgi does not show Bowes, Spencer, or
Ferguson, the three maiden names of ladies recently marrying into The
Firm that I know off the top of my head.

Laurel might or might not rule that they're protected, but I suspect
that they would not thereby make it into the Armorial.
