Well as someone who once lived in the NE USA Maine & New Hampshire northern waters aren't "blue" they are more grey. And again unless he's Venus all of Ireland is surrounded by water and it wouldn't be unusual enough for him to be from the sea/ocean. 
In actuality Eric "the Red" 's real name was Eric Thorvaldson.  The Red was a nickname that he earned or was given to him.

It is indeed Fiacha the Blue.  His original explanation had something
to do with the color of the sea.

I apologize for my inept handling of this.  I really don't even know
what sort of information I should be collecting to begin this process.
 I only know that I've had this on my to-do list for a long while and
I wanted to start doing *something* with it.
