Crap.  The male variant of one particular species (in this case, one
of three with "cardinal" in the name) gets labelled with "proper".

At least it's not as bad as "dogwood", where the North American
version seems to be considered the default (I don't know that that was
formally defined), superceded the tree with the same name from
England.
