birds in the cardinal family.  "Cardinal" is as specific as "dogwood".

A "cardinal proper" doesn't exist in nature.  Even with the most
well-known species in North America, there are at least two type, one
more buff and one more red.

What you seem to want is "a male Northern cardinal proper".
What's the exact wording on the precedent against "Linnaean proper"?
