It's probably a direct quotation from the Pic Dic.  Thing is,
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warded_lock> says that wards are part of
the lock mechanism, not part of a key.  But that article cites
absolutely no sources and, in a couple of minutes of searching,
I wasn't able to find anything authoritative.  A couple of minutes
more suggests that "bit" is the correct word for the blade at the
tip.
