The only place this really applies is and you can get around that by
putting in spaces: < i >

Removing < > completely from S. Gabriel reports removes the readers
ability to easily detect specific spellings from a general reference to
the name that we're talking about. So, it's really not that great an idea.

Correct. That's on purpose. It's actually fairly normal for us to add
a comment like "Oh, I goofed in my earlier comment". We're human, it
happens. But to be able to remove a comment entirely would mess up the
dialogue flow and that's critical to have in order to understand the
discussion. In general, we only use editing a comment to fix a typo or
to say something like "Oops. Duplicate comment added. Removed." Or a
note that the comment was supposed to be under the device and you added
it to the name, so you moved it.

Actually, you can add it as:

My name
My - English given name
1544 Names from Pensance
by the Great Dufus
My - given name

but you have to add
(for a line break) after each line where you
want it to break but that you don't have a blank line afterwards. So:

My name
My - English given name
1544 Names from Pensance
by the Great Dufus
My - given name

will get you:

My name
My - English given name
1544 Names from Pensance
by the Great Dufus
My - given name

The sign out is a 1 hour idle time, last I checked. I routinely take 20
or 30 minutes to research and write up a comment and I haven't had any
problems.

The only problem I've hit is when I am not paying attention and
accidentally click away from the page. Then I loose what I've written.
So, when writing an especially tricky comment, I'll select all and hit
copy every so often so my last version is saved to my clipboard. That
way, if I mess up and click away, I can paste it back in when I navigate
back to the Comment page.

I haven't hit one that has posted my comments multiple times.
