Thanks for the clarification, everyone.  That makes perfect sense.

So, if someone wanted a ewer/pitcher as the sole charge on a fieldless
badge, there's 1 CD automatically for field, so the only thing that
could conflict would be any device or badge that had a ewer or pitcher
as its sole charge in the same tincture, right?  So, "(Fieldless) A
ewer sable," conflicts with "Argent, a ewer sable," or "Gyronny of
eight gules and Or, a ewer sable," but does not conflict with any of
the following?

Argent, two ewers sable
Argent, a goblet sable
Argent, a ewer gules
Argent, a ewer within a bordure sable.

If it's not one, single ewer sable with no other charges there's no
possibility of conflict, right?
