One other way to bend that color on color is to make one or both of those
neutral.  Perhaps Per saltire gules and argent, a bordure sable. Or (and I
am really not sure of this stylistic piece) Per saltire gules and argent, a
bordure per saltire argent and sable. Neither have been conflict checked.
