Jin Liu Ch'ang here

In my continuing set of lists from Tusser's "Five hundred Points of Good Husbandry" from the 1580 edition, here is the sixth list:

Herbs to Still in Somer

1. Blessed thistle 2. Betanie 3. Dill 4. Endive 5. Eiebright 6. Fennell
7. Fumetorie 8. Isop 9. Mints 10. Plantine 11. Roses red and damaske
12. Respies 13. Saxefrage 14. Strawberies 15. Sorell 16. Suckerie
17. Woodrofe for sweete waters and cakes

What does he mean by "to still" in the title? Does he mean that these herbs were grown to make what Culpeper calls "distilled waters"? In Culpeper, he mentions how to distill. In this section he mentions using a pewter still but says that distilling in sand is better. What does he mean by distilling in sand? Are these methods period?
