HERB - Mint

Rhiannon,

I'm not an herbalist, but when I was a kid, my Appalachian grandmother told me
that peppermint and spearmint tea was soothing to the stomach. I don't know
if it's just old Appalachian folklore, but it's always worked for me. Oh, if
you buy it at the store, check the ingredients to be sure it's made with mint
and isn't just flavored regular tea. I've found a lot of my friends are
unaware of that practice.

Mint is a wonderful confidence builder for expanding into things like root
layering. I bought my peppermint plant about 13 months ago, and I've layered
8 or 10 new plants from it, easier than growing most things from seed. The
only other thing to really watch is watering. A summer "dry period" of 2 or
more months is normal in my area, and that can kill even a mint. To keep the
plant producing at it's best, you'll want to cut it for tea fairly frequently.
Otherwise, it gets scraggly and starts producing too many runners.
