Hi from a lurker.
Sylvia Landsberg, in "The Medieval Garden" Thames & Hudson, NY.,
reprints the Fromond list (ca.1525)from J.Harvey, 1989. In it, gourds
are listed, and Harvey has given the Latin name as Lagenaria vulgaris.
Landsberg has worked with Harvey in England, recreating period
gardens, i.e., Queen Eleanor's Garden at Winchester, and the
Shrewsbury Quest (Cadfael's) Garden. She has a chapter on creating
your own medieval garden, with plans for trellises, seats, etc. Also,
in the index in the back, all the plants are listed giving common and
botanical names. Good source, if you want to recreate a garden.
Bye
Edwinna of Hawk's Bluff
