HERB - Nightshades

Jadwiga has described what may be vining or woody nightshade (_Solanum
dulcamara_), except that I would not call the leaves heart-shaped. They
are more lanceolate with two tabs extending from the base. (Or she may
be describing something else entirely.) She is correct that nightshade
does not at all resemble borage. None of the species of solanum in the
Peterson Field Guide _Venomous Animals & Poisonous Plants_ (Foster &
Caras) resembles borage, although most of them do have star shaped
flowers in shades of white or purple (but not the bright blue of borage).
The flowers of deadly nightshade (_Atropa belladona_) are bell shaped
and it has paired leaves - one larger than the other.

Borage (_Borago officinalis_) is very hairy, but lacks the spines that
occur on the hairy nightshades. It also has a pleasant cucumbery scent
when crushed. Overall, it is a much coarser plant than most of the
nightshades.
