If you're interested in the different kinds of potpourri and how to make
them, there are some excellent books on how to make them. An older one, if
you can find it, is POTPOURRIS AND OTHER FRAGRANT DELIGHTS by Jacqueline
Heriteau, Penguin Books, 1973. She covers both moist and dry potpourris,
plus strewing herbs, tussi-mussies, brunging perfumes, herbal vinegars, etc.
She scatters historical recipes through out the books, including some period
ones, and also explains the principles well enough that you can experiment
with blending your own potpourris.
Period potpourris were sometimes hung near heat. In the 1594 edition of Sir
Hugh Plat's DELIGHTS FOR LADIES, he says, "...you should hang your pot in an
open chimney or near a continual fire so that the petals will keep exceeding
fair in colour and be most delicate in scent."
