On a slightly tangential note, have you ever read _The Harvester_  by Gene 
Stratton-Porter?  It was written back in the 20s, I think, and is a 
fictional work about a man who earns his living wildcrafting.  It's got 
quite a bit of info on ginseng if I remember correctly.  Gene 
Stratton-Porter was a naturalist, and her books are chock full of 
interesting plants and insects.
