Did you get it on the bargain table or a sale table? There's a difference
in my mind between the two.

I do agree with you though. Every so often you can find a true gem on
bargain tables. But still firmly believe that the vast majority of the
items for sale on bargain tables at bookstores are rarely bargains.
I still firmly believe that until someone has a good idea of what they
really want out of herbal research I would say buy the more expensive
book first. This sounds really backwards to most people, I'm sure.

I think that a good book will *always* be of help to you. An only
so-so book will take up space and force you to buy more books. If
you're into book collecting, that may be fine, but if your budget is
limited, I say save for the one that will do you most good. Better still,
go get the book through interlibrary loan and *then* decide if you
want to buy it.

If you had to buy one book for the beginner, what would it be? I'd
bet you that 99% of the time, you wouldn't find that book on the
bargain table at any bookstore. Sale table yes. Bargain table, no.

(BTW, the one book I'd buy would be Rodale's Herbs.)

Ah, now used bookstores are a different story. I've found some
absolute treasures at them. Used bookstores are a different breed
entirely. I've been really lucky to find a number of them in my
area. But, even when I lived in the Upper Penninsula, I was lucky
to have good ones nearby (Snow Bound Books; 84 Charing Cross, Eh?).
I have a lovely copy of Froissart's Chronicles and a gorgeous edition
of Sir Edmund Spencer's "The Faire Queen" from used bookstores.
No herb or herb research books, but I keep hoping. :)
