I've forwarded this to the herb list because there are several soap makers
on the list, and I'm curious about the answer.
The original question was what weight is a "strike"?

> The recipe is for soap and comes from Thomas Dawson's "The Second
Part of the Good Huswifes jewell," Printed in London, 1606. Here is a
little more of the recipe:
> "To make sope. First you must take halfe a strike of Ashen ashes, and
a quart of Lime, then you must mingle both these together..."
> I have recieved a few replies privately (with refrences) that list a
strike at between 16 and 18 english gallons. Does 8-9 gallons of ash to a
quart of lime seem a bit out of proportion for making soap?
