HERB - Off Topic: Rune Casting.

When I was on the web researching runes most of the sites that came up were
pictures of huge (Really big) boulders with what looked to my uneducated
eyes to be some type of hyrogliphic writing on it. Can someone tell me if
this is what runes really were?

do you think that in period ( let's say pre 1000 Iceland) runes were cast by
women only, or by both sexes? Odin was granted the gift of runes, but did he
cast them or only use them for 'magical purposes'. Did Rig cast runes? What
about Kon?
