If you have a relatively wet area and would like a somewhat spreading
small tree, you might consider elder. The flowers are edible and good
for flu and feverish colds, and the berries are edible (small though, and
on the sour side) and have been used to make wine. It is very pretty in
the spring when it blooms. The plant sends up many shoots from the base,
and will spread if you don't contain it. It usually grows in ditches
around here, and I think it likes wet feet. Ours never sets berries, due
to the dryness of the Ansteorran summers, and the fact that I don't water
real often. In some areas it might be considered a nuisance or a weed,
so you might want to check. I do not know how winter-hardy it is - it
grows throughout Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma - don't know where you
are. You should be able to grow it from berries or by digging up a
sapling, and I think I rooted a cutting in water to plant ours. Just
another idea for your consideration...

If you take a cutting of a tree, take a tip cutting of the green and
tender stem. This usually roots better than the woody stem. Actually,
take several cuttings, just to be on the safe side.

Other water loving trees are willows and some cypress...
