"A Modern Herbal", by Mrs. Grieve is a very useful book as a second or
third reference. It has a very comprehensive description of many herbs,
including the chemical constituents known at the time it was written
(1931). I do not recommend it as a first herbal reference, because the
indexing is not sufficient - there is no index for symptoms or general
uses, for example, which are really useful in a primary reference. Very
good for backup, though. It should be available from Dover in a 2 volume
set (I got mine in the 70's, but I think it is still available).
