   Sublimate was a very popular medicinal as well as a cosmetic.  Monardes
recommends using it on festering wounds because it would apparently dissolve
the damaged tissue.

Makes sense, mercury salts are corrosive and antibacterial.  It would act as
an astringent due to the removal of the outer layers of skin similar to a
chemical peel.  It would also be very helpful in preventing infection and
removal of necrotic tissue of wounds.
