I've planted peppermint in the sun, and it malingered, though it grew a
bit. I planted it in part shade, where (the aforementioned) Mentha Citrata
and Lemon Balm thrived... it struggled on for a few years, then gave up
the ghost. Right now I've got it in part shade near a downspout, and it's
coming up, but very spottily. Every other mint I grow comes up in big flat
carpets (I managed to grow garden mint and chocolate mint (which is
supposed to be a peppermint cultivar) in pots; in fact, I've been
considering dividing the chocolate mint.

Also, last year I planted one Lemon Balm in my backyard, expecting it to
cheerfully self sow-- in my mom's garden it comes up in little clumps
everywhere spread from the one plant I put in about 10 years ago. It came
back this year but didn't spread at all... I'm not sure what happened.
Could it have been the drought? It did flower, but not as much as usual.
