Isoflavones are phytochemicals. Specifically, they are non-nutritive
chemicals, unlike vitamins, minerals, prtoein, carbs, fat, etc.
There's a lot of research going on in nutrition therapy today
concerning isoflavones and their disease preventative properties
(specifically in cancer and heart disease research from what I've
seen). Isoflavones are a type of thing called a phytoestrogen
compound. Phytoestrogens are compounds with weak estrogen
activity. A lot of phytoestrogens are found in edible plants such
as peas and legumes, especially soy beans.

If you do a search on the web for "isoflavones" you should come up
with a number of decent summary sources and a bit on the research
in disease prevention done with soy-based isoflavones.
