Because the raw unheated sap (apparently of at least one of the subspecies
of the plant) has some such effects.  Numbness, tingling, and occasionally
hallucinations, feelings of invincibility, and dry mouth.  After more
research, I find that it is a fairly rare subspecies, and that heating
destroys any of the active ingredients.  In other words, YMMV.  More
likely, _will_ vary.
