Greetings!

Another black dye that can be used is oak galls, but again, the problem
is the species! Oak gall was mostly used as ink in period, but could
also be used in the dyeing process. Now, there are American oak galls,
and there are European oak galls, and the two look nothing alike.
There's a merchant (aside of Claus the toymaker) who sells European oak
galls, but if you're looking for "acceptable substitutes", I'd take
American oak galls with suitable documentation. (Is this the Scadian
version of the "bait and switch"?? ;-) Look at oak leaves for brown
bumps, from smaller than a pinkie nail to very big (larger diameter than
a quarter). Toss in pot, boil within an inch of it's leetle life, toss
in fabric sample!
